Bitcoin vs. Alt-coins - Optimizing Your Crypto Portfolio
« on: November 30, 2020, 10:50:04 PM »
I'm not a Bitcoin maximalist, but I do believe that Bitcoin should be the largest part of your portfolio. Bitcoin should be your largest investment because it decreases your risk dramatically. Many people stay away from Bitcoin, because alt-coins have more upside potential. Although this is true, the risk of investing in altcoins is exponentially higher than the risk of investing in Bitcoin.

Think about it:

Alt-coins rely upon a bullish sentiment for Bitcoin to increase in value, but are not guaranteed to increase in value, just because Bitcoin does. Bitcoin going up is not guaranteed, and is a risky bet. Putting money in an alt-coin, you take on the risk of Bitcoin not going up, as well as your altcoin not going up, even if Bitcoin should.

In other words, you take on the risk that every Bitcoin investor does, as well as the risk that your specific alt coin is left behind in an eventual Bitcoin bullmarket.

Therefore, I think that Bitcoin should be the largest crypto asset in ones portfolio, as it guarantees that at least one of your assets gain value when the bullmarket comes.

However, one can expose themselves to alt-coins to "spice things up". As long as you don't go crazy, it's not a problem to diversify into a few solid altcoins to increase your potential rewards.

Well then, how much of your portfolio should be in alt-coins?

It depends on the risk your willing to take, as well as what alt-coins you invest in. If the only alt-coin you invest in is Ethereum, you can be forgiven for placing up to 50% in it, as it's the safest bet of all the alt-coins. However, if you speculate on small-cap altcoins like MATIC or BAND, you're better think twice before putting a large portion of your cash into it.

Some general recommendations for the average person:

- Keep at least 50% of your portfolio in Bitcoin.

- Have Ethereum be your largest alt-coin investment.

- Keep your small-cap and highly speculative investments below 10% of your portfolio.

- Accumulate Bitcoin FIRST, then you can start speculating with alt-coins.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject in the reply section!

I think this is a good way of managing your crypto portfolio. I don't think it's good to invest all of your money in one cryptocurrency, or only in altcoins and tokens - diversification is important here as well, but sometimes people forget about it.

True. I see a lot of people either being all in on Bitcoin, or all in on alt-coins. I think they'll learn over time. Makes me think of this meme: https://imgur.com/8JqACra It's only a meme, but it has some truth to it.

Yes, the meme is true indeed, for many people. But you're right, it doesn't have to be one or the other.

Indeed, and now it's above $23,000! I expected it to dump sooner but it's quite steadily above 23k so far.
Also, congrats for finishing your exams! :D

Thank you! Still holding well above 20k, this is looking really bullish. Do you think we'll see an altseason like we did last time we broke through our previous ATH?

One should be careful with altcoins. Even the most popular ones are vulnerable. Ripple, for example, fell like a rock because SEC filed charges for 1.3 billion dollars against its CEOs.

I'm not sure whether we'll see and alt season. It's possible, when bitcoin's reputation grows it tends to affects altcoins positively too. And since I last visited this thread the price got close to $30k so it's still very bullish.

I think this is not just limited to altcoins. There are news such as lawsuits, scandals etc. in every market, and all asset categories can be rattled by these occurrences.

The question is in which altcoin to invest. Even the most seemingly popular and secure among them are not entirely trustworthy. Look at what happened with Ripple - once toted as the third most popular crypto in the world, it got sued by SEC and then lost a lot of its value.

Ripple got sued because the SEC thinks that XRP is a security. This should not come as a huge surprise, as they have been discussing it for years. The prior head of the SEC was anti-crypto as well.

It's interesting to watch the Bitcoin dominance these days, we're at a critical point between 67.5% and 73% and we'll probably see an altcoin season if we drop below 67.5%. I write about this, and give regular updates alts and the bBitcoin Dominance in in my newletter. Feel free to sign up if you're interested in regular updates.
