Trying to understand minimum difficulty on Btcguild using Black Avlon thumbs

Using cgminer v4.2.1 and 4 black Avalon thumbs on BTCguild pool but despite reading several Googled explanations about the worker minimum difficulty setting still do not get what it does or how it effects mining.

Can anyone explain it in plain none jargon?

Cheers  :)
