Bitcoin Windows .dll / Linux .so
« on: May 18, 2012, 02:59:51 AM »
What would be the best way to make #bitcoin development easier?

I believe that the bitcoin core developers should think a little about this.

Why until now no Bitcoin "Windows .dll" or "Linux .so" was developed?

It will improve Bitcoin development. C'mon @gavinandresen make it easy!!!

We've talked about it on the chat, I think that having the source available kinda makes this useless to libraries for bitcoin as you can just copy/paste the code from the other client.
since the qt interface isn't really tied to the vital component of the client.

I don't think "copy/past" is the best way to develop software.

A dll could really make sense. This way we will not reinventing the wheel.

The wheel has been re-invented several times... It is called improvements..
For example, which would you want to drive your brand new car on:
  • stone wheels with NO rubber
  • wooden wheels with NO rubber
  • Steel wheels with solid rubber
  • Steel wheels with inflated rubber
  • Aluminum wheels with inflated rubber
Personally I would go for the Aluminum wheels with inflated rubber because they are lighter and smoother then the rest I listed. But had the wheel not been "reinvented" then we would have crappy wheels and crappy dirt roads to ride them on... EVERYTHING CAN BE IMPROVED >>.<<

As for making development around Bitcoin, it already is extremely simple... I personally see no need in creating a dll/so... Although depending how it was done and what the aim of it is... It could make some things more simple...

For example, I could use a dll with Excel to generate a keypair... Using vba just to load it and ask the dll to generate the keypair.

Excel developers do not need to re-coding the keypai feature they just need to use it and so on.
